What Poland Actually Changes About Solar Design Software

Net-billing changed the sizing logic. Under the previous opust arrangement, a prosumer exported surplus and withdrew most of it later, which made the grid function as free storage and rewarded generous sizing. Under net-billing, exported energy is valued at a market reference price and imports are paid at the retail price, which is much higher. The gap between those two prices is the entire reason to consume on site, and it makes array sizing a consumption-matching exercise.

Midday prices can collapse. Poland has added enough solar that wholesale prices during sunny midday periods can fall very low, and occasionally negative. Because net-billing settles export against market prices, a system generating a large surplus at exactly the time everyone else does earns very little for it. That is an argument for east-west orientation, for storage, and for load shifting, and it only shows up in hourly modelling.

Connection is an OSD decision. The distribution system operators, principally Tauron, PGE Dystrybucja, Enea Operator, and Energa Operator, issue connection conditions. In parts of the country capacity is constrained and applications are refused or limited. For commercial projects the available connection capacity is an input to the design, not an approval to obtain afterwards.

PN-EN standards govern the package. Polish practice follows the European standards adopted as PN-EN, including PN-EN 62446 for the documentation, testing, and commissioning of PV systems. The commissioning documentation set is specific, and no international design tool emits it.

Support programmes shift. Programmes such as Mój Prąd have supported prosumer uptake, with terms changing between editions. Any incentive figure carried in a design or proposal should be checked against the current edition rather than a cached value.

What a Polish Design Package Has to Contain

  1. Layout with module positions and orientation, including any east-west configuration and the rationale for it.
  2. Single-line diagram with protection, isolation, and metering to the OSD’s connection conditions.
  3. Connection application to the relevant distribution system operator, with the granted capacity reflected in the design.
  4. Hourly generation and consumption analysis showing the self-consumption share under net-billing.

What Most Polish Installers Get Wrong

They still size systems as though the opust arrangement applied.

The habit is deeply embedded because it was correct for years: export freely, withdraw later, size generously. Under net-billing that logic inverts, and a system sized to produce a large midday surplus is producing energy at exactly the hours it is worth least. Polish customers who bought oversized systems in the transition period are now the market’s most vocal sceptics, which makes honest sizing a competitive advantage rather than a lost sale.

The second mistake is designing before the connection conditions arrive. Where the OSD limits or refuses capacity, a completed design has to be redone, and the customer has already been quoted.
