What Spain Actually Changes About Solar Design Software
RD 244/2019 sets the regime. The royal decree defines self-consumption categories, including installations without surplus, with surplus eligible for simplified compensation, and with surplus outside that mechanism. The category chosen affects metering, contracting, and the paperwork, and it has to be decided during design rather than discovered afterwards.
The REBT governs the installation. The Reglamento Electrotecnico para Baja Tension, with ITC-BT-40 covering generating installations connected to the network, is the technical framework. Documentation, protection arrangements, and conductor sizing follow it, and a drawing set produced from a foreign template does not.
Legalizacion is the schedule. After installation, the project has to be registered with the autonomous community’s industry department and the distribution company, principally i-DE, e-distribucion, or UFD depending on region. Collective self-consumption is real. Autoconsumo colectivo allows several consumers near an installation to share its output according to agreed allocation coefficients. What Most Spanish Installers Get Wrong
They design for peak sun and ignore the load curve.
Spain has enough irradiance that a south-facing array produces a large, sharp midday peak. If the customer is a household empty during the day, most of that peak is exported at a compensation rate well below retail, and the payback is much worse than the generation figure implies. Spanish commercial customers with daytime load are a far better fit, and the design for a residential customer often should be smaller, west-shifted, or paired with storage.
The second mistake is treating legalizacion as a formality handled after installation. Requirements differ by autonomous community, and a project designed without checking the local process ends up waiting.
