File format is not a footnote in a solar design contract. It decides whether your team can fix a typo in ten minutes or redraw a sheet in three hours. It decides whether your CAD staff can reuse a layout for the next phase of a project or start over. This guide breaks down the three formats every solar EPC, installer, or in-house CAD team runs into: DWG and DXF for editable CAD work, PDF for permit submittal, and Revit or IFC for building-integrated projects. Buyers should always request the native DWG or DXF alongside the PDF, confirm the AutoCAD version used, and put file ownership and editable-source delivery in writing before the project starts.

A residential permit job rarely needs Revit. A rooftop system tied into a new commercial building’s structural and mechanical design almost always does. Knowing which stage you are buying for keeps you from paying for BIM you do not need, or worse, discovering too late that you needed it and did not ask.
DWG: the editable native format
DWG is Autodesk’s proprietary binary file format, native to AutoCAD. It is the file your designer actually works in. Every layer, block, dimension, and annotation lives inside it in a form AutoCAD can reopen and modify without any loss of information.
If your in-house CAD team runs AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, or Civil 3D, DWG is what you want in hand. It lets you:
- Adjust module counts or string layouts when a site survey turns up a change.
- Reuse a rooftop layout as a starting point for a nearly identical building.
- Pull dimensions and quantities directly for your own bill of quantities process.
- Make the small label or note corrections that a plan reviewer flags, without going back to the original vendor and waiting on a queue.
One catch buyers miss: AutoCAD versions matter. A DWG saved in AutoCAD 2025 format will not open cleanly in AutoCAD 2018 without a “save as” downgrade step. Ask your vendor which release they draft in, and if your internal team runs an older version, ask them to save a compatible copy. This is a two-minute request that avoids a support ticket later.
DXF: the cross-platform interchange format
DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is Autodesk’s open, published-specification alternative to DWG. It was built specifically so drawings could move between different CAD applications without everyone standardizing on AutoCAD. Where DWG is a native, semi-proprietary binary format, DXF is a documented ASCII or binary structure that other software vendors can read and write against.
DXF shows up constantly in solar design workflows because the tools upstream of final CAD are rarely AutoCAD-native. Structural analysis software, GIS platforms, and some proposal tools use DXF the same way, as the neutral bridge format.
Buyers should request DXF specifically when:
- Your internal team uses a non-Autodesk CAD platform (BricsCAD, DraftSight, or similar) that reads DXF more reliably than DWG.
- You need to hand the layout to a structural engineer or a third-party racking manufacturer who works in a different CAD ecosystem.
- You are archiving the design in a format that is less likely to break across future AutoCAD version changes.
DXF can lose some AutoCAD-specific features on export (custom object types, some dynamic block behavior). For most solar layout, SLD, and site plan work this loss is negligible. For heavily parametric structural models, it can matter, so confirm with your vendor if the project leans on advanced AutoCAD features.
PDF: the permit submittal format
PDF is not a CAD format at all. It is a fixed-layout document format, standardized as ISO 32000, built to look identical no matter what device or software opens it. That is exactly why AHJs and utility reviewers want it instead of a DWG.
A plan reviewer does not need to edit your drawing. They need to:
- Open it reliably on whatever software their office runs, often a decade-old PDF viewer with no CAD plugin.
- Mark it up with redline comments during review.
- Print it, sometimes still on paper, for a physical file.
- See exactly what you submitted, with zero risk that a font substitution or missing xref shifts a dimension.

One practical note. A “flattened” PDF, where CAD layers are merged into static ink, is standard for submittal. Some jurisdictions now accept layered PDFs where reviewers can toggle sheet elements, but flattened remains the safe default unless your AHJ explicitly asks otherwise.
Buyers should never accept PDF as the only deliverable on a project where the same layout will need modification again. Once a drawing exists only as a flattened PDF, getting it back into an editable state means redrawing it, not editing it.
Revit and IFC: BIM formats for integrated projects
Revit is Autodesk’s Building Information Modeling authoring tool. Its native file, .rvt, does not store a flat 2D drawing the way DWG does. It stores a 3D model where the roof, the structural framing, the mechanical ducts, and the solar array all exist as coordinated objects in the same model space. Change the roof pitch and the array tilts with it, because the objects are linked, not just drawn to look right.
This matters on projects where solar is not a bolt-on system going onto an existing building. New construction with rooftop solar designed into the building from day one, large commercial retrofits with structural upgrades, and projects where a general contractor is running clash detection between trades, all benefit from Revit-based coordination. IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) is the vendor-neutral counterpart to RVT. It is an open standard maintained by buildingSMART, designed so a Revit model, an ArchiCAD model, and a structural analysis tool can all exchange building data without everyone standardizing on one vendor’s software. If your general contractor or architect does not run Revit, IFC is how your solar model reaches them intact.
Two things buyers should know before requesting Revit deliverables:
- It costs more and takes longer. Building a coordinated BIM model is a different scope than drafting a 2D layout. Confirm with your vendor whether BIM is included in the base fee or billed as an addition; most solar design shops treat it as a separate line item.
- Not every vendor does it well. Solar-specific Revit families (module, racking, inverter objects with accurate geometry and connection points) are a narrower skill set than general AutoCAD drafting. Ask to see a sample Revit deliverable from a comparable project before committing.
For a pure rooftop residential or small commercial permit job, Revit is almost always overkill. Save it for projects where you are actually coordinating with an architect’s or GC’s BIM workflow.
SketchUp’s role: proposal work, not construction documents
SketchUp (.skp) comes up in early-stage solar work, particularly residential and commercial proposal generation. Its strength is fast 3D massing and visualization that a sales team can show a customer, not precision construction drafting. Solar proposal tools built on SketchUp workflows can produce a compelling 3D rendering of panel placement on a roof in minutes.
Where SketchUp falls short is precision. It was not built for the dimensional tolerance, layer structure, or annotation standards that a permit reviewer expects. We have never seen an AHJ accept a SketchUp export as a permit submittal, and we would not recommend trying. Treat SketchUp output as a sales and site-assessment tool, then move into DWG for anything that touches a permit package.
SketchUp Pro can import and export DWG and DXF, which is useful if your workflow starts in SketchUp for massing and needs to hand off geometry to an AutoCAD-based drafting team. Free SketchUp versions typically restrict this import/export capability to paid tiers, so confirm which license your vendor or internal team runs before assuming the handoff will work.
Editable vs non-editable: what buyers actually need to know
“Editable” is doing a lot of work in solar design contracts, and vendors do not always mean the same thing by it. Three distinct scenarios show up in practice.
Fully editable, source-format delivery. You receive the DWG with all layers, blocks, and xrefs intact, along with any Revit families or DXF interchange files the project used. Your team can open, modify, and reuse the work freely. This is what most EPCs assume they are buying unless told otherwise.
Locked, flattened delivery. You receive PDFs only. Fine for the permit submittal itself, a problem if it is the only record of the design. If the AHJ sends the project back for revision six months later and your vendor relationship has ended, you are redrawing from scratch.
Editable with restricted use. Some vendors deliver DWG files but restrict their use through the service agreement, for example limiting reuse to the specific project or prohibiting resale of the layout as a template. This is a legitimate business protection for the vendor, not a red flag, but it needs to be written down so both sides know the boundary.
Note that “editable file” and “ownership” are separate questions. A vendor can hand you an editable DWG while retaining IP ownership and licensing you the right to use it, which is standard and reasonable. What buyers should watch for is a contract silent on both points, where the default assumption is unclear and becomes a dispute later.
What to put in your contract
Four lines in a purchase order or master service agreement head off most of the format disputes we see.
- Name the deliverable formats explicitly. “Design deliverables” is not a format. Write “DWG (AutoCAD 2021 or later), PDF, and DXF where applicable” into the scope.
- State that editable source files are included, not optional. If BIM is part of the project, name RVT or IFC separately, since it is commonly a distinct line item.
- Confirm software version compatibility in writing, particularly if your internal team runs an older AutoCAD release or a non-Autodesk CAD platform that needs DXF.
- Set a revision window for corrections that require reopening the editable file, separate from a completely new redraw. Vendors typically hold a 24 to 48 hour SLA on redline-driven revisions when the source file is already in hand; that number balloons if the file has to be reconstructed.

What most EPCs get wrong
The most common mistake is not asking about format at all until the first revision request. Teams negotiate price, timeline, and scope in detail, then accept whatever files show up. By the time a change is needed, it is too late to ask for something that was never part of the deal.
The second most common mistake runs the other way: buyers assume DWG delivery means they can freely reuse a vendor’s proprietary AutoCAD blocks, title block templates, or standard details across unrelated projects. Editable does not automatically mean unrestricted. Read the licensing language, not just the file extension.
A third pattern we see, mostly on larger commercial jobs, is requesting Revit because a competitor mentioned it, without a clear need. If there is no architect or GC running a coordinated BIM workflow on the project, Revit adds cost and timeline without a matching benefit. Match the format to the project’s actual coordination requirements, not to what sounds more advanced.
