What Are Solar As-Built Drawings?
Solar as-built drawings are the corrected version of the permitted plan set, updated to reflect what the crew actually installed. The permit set shows intent. The as-built set shows reality. In a perfect project the two are identical, and the as-built is just a re-title of the permit drawings. In real projects, field conditions force changes, and the as-built set captures every one of them.
Definition. An as-built drawing (also called a record drawing) is the final revision of the construction documents that records the installed condition of the system. It documents equipment models, layout dimensions, conductor sizes, conduit routes, and the point of interconnection, as verified on site after installation.

- Cover sheet. Project address, contractor license, NEC edition, and a revision block listing what changed.
- Site plan and array layout. Final module positions, actual setbacks, and any roof obstructions the array was shifted around.

- Labels and placards. Rapid shutdown, directory, and warning labels as placed, per NEC 690.12 and NEC 705.10.
The single-line diagram deserves special attention. It is the sheet the utility engineer reads first, because the interconnection agreement was approved against specific equipment. When Do AHJs and Utilities Require As-Built Drawings?
Short answer: at the end of the project, in three specific situations. The Authority Having Jurisdiction asks at final inspection. The utility asks before issuing PTO. And lenders, financiers, or O&M providers ask at project handover. Each audience reads the same set differently.
1. Final inspection and permit closeout. Many building departments will not close the permit until the inspector can compare the installed system against an accurate record. If the field inspector finds an inverter that does not match the approved plans, you will get a correction notice. That notice almost always says some version of “submit revised or as-built plans.”
2. Utility interconnection and PTO. The utility approved your interconnection application against specific equipment and a specific single-line diagram. Before energizing, the utility verifies that the connected system matches the application. Utilities such as CenterPoint Energy spell this out as a formal step between construction and PTO in their published interconnection process (CenterPoint Energy, 2026). Any equipment mismatch discovered at this stage stops the meter swap.
3. Financier, lender, and O&M handover. Third-party owners, lease providers, and commercial lenders require record drawings for their asset files. On commercial and industrial projects, the O&M contract usually names as-builts as a condition of takeover. There is a fourth, quieter trigger. Incentive programs with deadlines. SREC registries, state rebate administrators, and federal Investment Tax Credit documentation all lean on the final inspected system. A project stuck waiting on as-builts can miss a quarterly incentive window. The US installed roughly 50 GWdc of new solar capacity in 2024, according to SEIA and Wood Mackenzie (2025). What Changed-vs-Permitted Documentation Actually Looks Like
The phrase “as-built” scares installers because it sounds like redrawing everything. In practice, a changed-vs-permitted package is the original plan set with the deltas clearly marked. There are three accepted ways to show those deltas, and most AHJs accept all three.
Red-lines. The field supervisor marks changes directly on a printed or PDF copy of the permit set. Crossed-out model numbers, arrows showing moved modules, hand-written conduit notes. A drafting team then converts the red-lines into a clean CAD revision. This is the most common path for residential work.
Clouded revisions. The CAD set is reissued with revision clouds around each change, a triangle revision tag, and a revision block describing each change. Commercial AHJs and utility engineers prefer this format because the reviewer can find every change in seconds.
Deviation log. A one-page table listing every difference between permit and build, with the sheet reference and the reason. Some utilities and financiers ask for this explicitly. Even when nobody asks, including one cuts review time because the reviewer does not have to hunt.

Field tip. Have the crew lead photograph the installed inverter nameplate, the main panel label, and the array from two angles before leaving the site. Those five photos answer 90% of the questions a drafting team will otherwise email you about.
One detail that catches installers off guard: rapid shutdown device placement. Under NEC 690.12 in NEC 2023 (published by NFPA), the as-built must show the actual rapid shutdown initiation device location and labeling. Inspectors check this against the drawings more often than any other line item, according to our own permit teams’ correction logs.
The Paper Trail Test: Permit Revision or Just a Red-Line?
Here is the question that decides your week. Does this field change require a formal permit revision, with plan-check fees and a new review queue, or can it ride through as a red-lined as-built? Most installers guess, and guessing wrong in either direction costs time. Over-document and you wait three weeks for a plan checker. Under-document and you fail inspection.
We use a four-question screen internally. We call it the Paper Trail Test. Run every field change through it, in order:
Does it change the structure?
Attachment type, spacing beyond the engineered span, added dead load, or a move to a different roof plane or structure. Any yes means a structural revision, usually with a new stamp.
Does it change the service equipment or interconnection method?
Main panel upgrade, supply-side tap versus load-side, breaker rating change, meter location. These affect the utility application and almost always need a revised SLD, and often a revised interconnection filing.
Does it change system size or certified equipment class?
Module count or wattage shifts that change array kW, or an inverter swap to a different certification listing. Utilities screen against UL 1741 and IEEE 1547-2018 compliance, so a swap outside the approved listing family needs a revision.
Is it none of the above?
Conduit reroutes, module shifts within the same roof plane and setback rules, label placement, equivalent part swaps with identical ratings. These ride through as red-lined as-builts in nearly every US jurisdiction.
A yes on questions 1, 2, or 3 means you prepare a formal revision. Four noes means you prepare as-builts only. Mixed answers mean you split the set: revise the affected sheets, red-line the rest.
Watch out. If your original permit set was PE-stamped, any change to a stamped sheet technically requires the engineer of record to re-stamp.
