The rate you see is not the rate you pay. Upwork charges the client a service fee of 5% on the Basic plan and 10% on Business Plus, according to Upwork’s client pricing page (2026). The fee applies on every payment. US clients paying by checking account get a discounted 3% or 8%. There is also a one-time contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99 per new contract.

1. Vetting time. Upwork has millions of profiles and a small fraction have real solar engineering depth. Screening profiles, reading portfolios, running a paid test task, and checking references takes 6 to 10 hours of founder or senior engineer time per hire. At any reasonable internal rate, that is $300 to $800 before the first deliverable.
2. QA becomes your job. A freelancer delivers files. Nobody checks the string sizing against NEC 690.7 temperature correction unless you do. 6. Code-edition drift. The AHJ decides which NEC edition applies, and adoption is fragmented. Price the failure mode
Multiply your rejection probability by the $2,000 to $5,000 correction cycle cost. A 20% rejection rate adds $400 to $1,000 of expected cost per deliverable.
Price the calendar
Every extra week in permitting delays PTO and payment milestones. For a US installer, two slipped weeks on 10 projects a month is a working-capital problem, not a rounding error.
Compare like for like
