Field tip. Be wary of any provider who will stamp drawings they did not review, at any price. State boards discipline engineers for "plan stamping," and the AHJ can void the permit when the seal is challenged.

One structural difference separates the business models. A freelance PE stamps what you send. An engineering bench checks the design against the loads first, then stamps. The second model catches the undersized attachment spacing and the wrong wind exposure before the AHJ does. What Most EPCs Get Wrong With Structural Stamps

The biggest misconception: “the racking manufacturer’s engineering letter covers us.” It does not. That letter certifies the racking hardware under stated test conditions. It says nothing about your specific roof framing, your specific wind speed, or your attachment layout. AHJs know this. It is the single most common structural rejection comment our permit team sees.

  1. Ordering the stamp after the plan set is done. The structural review can change the layout.   3. Ignoring edge and corner zones. ASCE 7 assigns higher wind pressures to roof edges and corners. A design that passes in the field zone can fail at the perimeter. This is the technical error behind most “attachment spacing too wide” comments.
  4. Skipping the framing verification. Stamping against assumed framing is a liability trap. If the survey did not confirm rafter size and spacing, the stamp certifies a guess.
