US PROPOSAL DESIGN

Quote faster without hiring a designer

Proposal drawings are a sales asset, not an engineering deliverable. They need to be accurate, they need to look good in front of a customer, and above all they need to arrive before your competitor's does.

We produce them at volume so your engineers stay on projects you have already won. When a deal closes, the same team carries that exact layout into a permit set.

DELIVERABLES

What is in a proposal package

Roof layout with module count

Usable roof area, module placement, and system size the customer can see.

Shade analysis

Obstruction modelling with monthly and annual shade impact per roof face.

Production estimate

Annual and monthly generation modelled against local irradiance data.

Offset and savings view

Production against the customer consumption profile from their utility bill.

Customer facing visual

A clean single page a homeowner or facility manager understands without help.

Preliminary equipment list

Module, inverter, and racking selection with quantities for your quote.

Preliminary BOM view

Enough detail to price the job without waiting on engineering.

Multiple design options

Good, better, best variants when the deal needs a price ladder.

SAMPLE OUTPUT

What your customer actually sees

Our own renders and layouts from live projects. This is the standard your proposals go out at.

Photorealistic 3D render of a solar array on a red metal industrial roof
Photorealistic render for a commercial roof. The version a facility manager signs off on.
3D solar pre-design model showing module tilt angle and north orientation on a residential roof
Tilt and orientation modelled explicitly, with north arrow, so the production number is defensible.
3D layout of solar arrays across multiple industrial sheds with shade numbering
Multi building layout with each shed identified. Useful when a site is phased across budgets.
3D render of an elevated solar array on a residential rooftop with obstructions modelled
Obstructions, water tanks, and parapets modelled, because they are what shade analysis turns on.

WHICH ONE DO YOU NEED

Proposal, permit, or detailed engineering

Three different documents for three different jobs. Most installers need all three, at different points in the pipeline.

Stage Purpose Built from Accuracy Output Speed
Proposal design Win the deal Satellite and aerial imagery, utility bill, your photos Sales accurate Layout, shade, production, savings, customer facing page Same day to next business day
Permit design Get the permit Confirmed roof framing, measured obstructions, adopted code cycle Code compliant and submittal ready Full plan set, single line and three line, structural notes, signage 24 to 48 hours residential
Detailed engineering Get it built Site survey, structural verification, equipment submittals Construction level Construction drawings, foundation design, STAAD verification, BOQ Scoped per project

Using one partner across all three is what keeps the sold layout and the permitted layout the same drawing.

WHY OUTSOURCE THIS LAYER

Three reasons installers move proposal work off the engineering desk

Speed

The first accurate quote usually wins

Sales stage design is a race. When your designer is also your permit engineer, proposals queue behind compliance work and the deal goes cold. Outsourcing the proposal layer keeps engineering free for revenue you have already won.

Volume

Most proposals never convert

Proposal work is inherently high volume and low conversion. Paying a full engineering salary to produce drawings that mostly do not turn into projects is the most common cost leak in a growing installer.

Continuity

Sold design and permitted design should match

When proposal and permit sit with different teams, the layout gets redrawn after the sale and dimensions drift. The customer signed for one thing and the permit shows another. One partner across both stages removes that gap.

WHAT CLOSES DEALS

Four things separate a proposal that closes from one that does not

We produce these at volume across US installers, so we see which ones convert and which ones sit unanswered.

Detailed solar module layout showing roof obstructions and setbacks
1

It arrives while the customer still cares

Interest decays fast. A proposal delivered the same afternoon as the site visit competes against nothing. The same proposal four days later competes against three others and a changed mind.

2

The savings number survives scrutiny

Customers now cross check production claims. An inflated estimate wins the signature and loses the referral, and in commercial deals it loses the deal outright when the finance team models it.

3

It looks like it came from an engineering company

A clean render with correct tilt, real obstructions, and a defensible production figure signals competence before a single word is read. A screenshot with modules pasted over a satellite image signals the opposite.

4

The layout that was sold is the layout that gets built

The most expensive proposal error is a module count that does not survive permitting. When the customer signed for 32 panels and the permit shows 26, you are renegotiating a closed deal.

PLATFORMS

Tools we design in

We would rather learn your stack than ask you to change it. Work can be delivered inside your own account or as finished files.

Aurora Solar

Full proposal builds inside your own Aurora account, including irradiance modelling, shade, and the customer facing output your sales team already uses.

HelioScope

Layout and production modelling for commercial and larger residential, where string level detail and loss breakdowns matter to the buyer.

PVsyst

Where the production figure has to be bankable rather than indicative, for commercial deals that go to a finance committee.

OpenSolar

Proposal builds and layout work in your existing OpenSolar workspace, with output delivered under your branding.

AutoCAD

Where a proposal needs a drawn layout rather than a modelled one, common for retrofit and industrial sites with unusual roof geometry.

Your own stack

If you run something else, tell us. We have worked in most of the mainstream tools and we would rather learn yours than ask you to change.

ENGAGEMENT MODELS

Start small or run daily volume

There is no retainer and no minimum. Most clients start with one project and scale once turnaround is proven.

Occasional

A few proposals a month

Per project, no commitment

Contractors adding solar to an existing trade, or testing our output before scaling.

Steady

Regular weekly volume

Per project with a named designer assigned

Growing residential installers who need predictable turnaround without a hire.

High volume

Daily flow

Dedicated team with agreed daily capacity and SLA

Multi crew installers and sales-led operations where proposal throughput caps growth.

Overflow

Peaks only

On call capacity alongside your in-house team

Installers with a designer already, who lose deals in busy months.

We work in your platform, not just ours

Most installers already run a proposal tool and do not want a second system. We work inside your existing Aurora Solar, HelioScope, or OpenSolar account so the project record, customer data, and version history stay where your team already looks for them.

If you would rather we deliver finished files instead, that works too. We model in PVsyst and HelioScope and hand over the output in the format your sales process expects.

PROCESS

From lead to signed contract

01

Send the lead

Address, utility bill or annual consumption, preferred equipment, roof photos if available.

02

We model the site

Imagery, roof faces, obstructions, and shade. Built in your platform or ours.

03

You get the proposal

Layout, shade, production, and a customer facing page. same day to next business day for standard residential.

04

Deal closes, we continue

The same team carries the sold layout into a permit set, so nothing gets redrawn.

FAQ

US Solar Proposal Design FAQs

What is a solar proposal design?
It is the drawing package your sales team uses to close a deal, produced before the project is sold. Typically a roof layout with module count, a shade analysis, a production estimate, and a one page visual the homeowner or facility manager can understand. It is not a permit set and is not built to permit depth.
How is proposal design different from permit design?
Proposal design is a sales tool and is optimised for speed and clarity. Permit design is a compliance document and is optimised for code accuracy and AHJ acceptance. A proposal drawing gets you the signature. A permit plan set gets you the permit. Most installers need both, at different points in the pipeline.
How fast is proposal turnaround?
Standard residential proposals go out same day to next business day. Speed is the whole point at this stage. A proposal that arrives four days after the site visit competes against three quotes that arrived the same afternoon.
Which design platforms do you work in?
We work in the mainstream proposal and simulation tools including Aurora Solar, HelioScope, PVsyst, and OpenSolar, and can deliver in your existing workspace so output lands in the workflow your sales team already uses. We compare these tools in detail across our Aurora versus HelioScope analysis.
Can you work inside our own Aurora or HelioScope account?
Yes. Many installers prefer designs built directly in their own account so the project record, the customer data, and the version history all stay in their system. We work that way regularly.
Do you produce shade analysis and production estimates?
Yes. Shade analysis, irradiance modelling, and annual production estimates are standard in a proposal package. For projects that need bankable yield numbers rather than sales estimates, that is a PVsyst report rather than a proposal.
Do you handle commercial and ground mount proposals?
Yes. Commercial rooftop and ground mount proposals take longer than residential because they involve preliminary structural review, larger equipment coordination, and often a preliminary interconnection view. We scope those individually.
What do you need from us to start a proposal?
Site address, a utility bill or annual consumption figure, roof photos if you have them, and your preferred module and inverter. Satellite and aerial imagery covers the rest for most residential sites.
Can the same team carry the project through to permit?
Yes, and it is the main reason to use one partner for both. When the proposal team and the permit team are the same team, the layout that was sold is the layout that gets permitted. Redrawing from scratch after the sale is where dimensions drift and customers get surprised.
Can you handle high proposal volume?
Yes. Proposal work is volume work by nature, since only a fraction of proposals convert. Our team is 50+ engineers and we serve more than 300 EPCs. If you send steady volume we assign a named designer who learns your template and preferences.
How accurate is a proposal layout compared to the final permit layout?
Close, but not identical, and the difference matters. A proposal layout is built from satellite and aerial imagery plus your photos. A permit layout is built from confirmed roof framing, measured obstructions, and the adopted fire code setbacks. We design proposals so the module count survives permitting, which means being slightly conservative rather than promising a layout that later loses rows to setbacks.
Do you use your own branding on the proposal?
No. Proposals go out under your brand, your title block, and your template. We are invisible to your customer, which is the point. White label delivery is standard on every proposal we produce.
Can you produce multiple design options for one lead?
Yes, and it often closes better. A good, better, best ladder lets the customer choose rather than accept or decline. Typically that means a full roof option, a budget option sized to offset most of the bill, and a premium option with storage.
What if the customer changes the equipment after the proposal?
We revise it. Equipment swaps are normal between first quote and signature, especially when supply changes or the customer moves on price. Revisions carry no extra charge.
Do you handle battery storage in proposals?
Yes. Storage changes the economics conversation entirely, particularly in states where export credit is low and self consumption drives the return. We model the battery alongside the array so the savings figure reflects what the customer will actually see.
What is the cost difference versus hiring a proposal designer?
An in-house designer is a fixed annual cost against demand that arrives unevenly. Outsourcing converts it to per project cost. The arithmetic, including the overhead most owners forget to count, is in the hidden cost of an in-house solar designer.
